April - May - June 2010 Board Training Topics

Topic 1 - Go no Sen (Block and Counter)
In the study of Go no Sen you are attacked by your opponent and deliver a blocking technique followed up with your counter attack in an effective manner. For this principle you must first block the attack and deliver the counter immediately.

Topic 2 - Sen no Sen (Both Attack and One Wins)
In the study of Sen no Sen both you and your opponent attack at the same time. You have to recognize their attack and switch your attack at the proper moment to a good counter. This principle may involve blocking sometimes as well but only as avoidance to counter attack.

Topic 3 - Sen Sen no Sen (Sense Opponents Attack)
In the study of Sen Sen no Sen you wait patiently for your opponent to attack and at the very instance they are going to attack you strike them first before they can commit to their attack thus winning the encounter.

These are primary principles involved in Kumite that directly relate to real life self defense ability. Many people make the mistake of thinking that Kumite is simply throwing techniques out as if in a thoughtless fight. This is very far from the truth and has no relevance to authentic martial arts training. The study of Kumite is about mastering these principles as well as others. Some of the other principles that are taught once a student gets high enough rank and shown excellent Kumite ability include:

*  Feinting / Faking an Opponent
*  Use Opponent's Ability / Technique Against Them
*  The Purpose and Intent of Proper Technique and Chambering
