Chil Nage Ichi no Kata - First Open Kata

This Kata, Chil Nage Ichi, began development when Sensei was a 5th Kyu green belt. His Sensei requested him to begin creating a Kata that demonstrated his understanding of intermediate level techniques yet has several Bunkai (hidden techniques) within it. The result was Chil Nage Ichi. Chil Nage Ichi is unique in several ways.

First the pattern is a triangle in which the student is to begin and end on the exact same spot. This differs highly from any other Kata in our system. Secondly it has aspects of three martial arts within it including Tae Kwon Do, Goju Ryu and Kenpo which makes it a very difficult Kata to master. Finally, since this was developed by Sensei at 5th kyu, it has been added to our system at the required Kata for all students to learn in order to examine for their own 5th Kyu level. By doing so we have purposefully passed on a unique aspect of Sensei's younger years as a student to each one of you.
