THE DOJO KUN
(ETHICS CREED OF THE DOJO)

"I shall conduct myself in a manner that will reflect
Honor and Respect upon myself and my dojo."

"I shall strive to be the best that I can be in whatever I do."

"I shall use my knowledge of Karate only in fair competition,
or in DEFENSE of my life, my family or my country."

The Five Precepts of Karate Do

The Five Precepts of the Dojo Kun encodes the moral essence of the study of karate which serves to balance its physical aspect. It is thus elevated above the level of being simply a method of ritualized violence or a modern competitive sport. It is thought that to ignore these moral goals would eventually lead to negative consequences for both the karateka and karate as a whole.

Though less common in the West, many dojos in Japan recite the Dojo Kun at the end of each training session. Through repeated practice and repetition, these ideals would become deeply ingrained in the student in the same way the physical techniques become ingrained. The oath is always chanted with great volume and strength. Usually, a senior karateka says each line, which is then repeated by the group.

The 5 Precepts of Karate, an explanation...

Seek Perfection of Character: Rather than speed, strength, or fighting skill, Master Funakoshi emphasized perfecting the students character to be a major goal of karate. In his writing, he contends that the study of karate helped him to act always in a controlled and rational manner.

Defend the Path of Truth: Advancement in karate should be truthful and not a matter of ego
gratification. It is rumored that some individuals teaching martial arts claim to have a level of skill and training far above their actual level and who may also, for a price, confer an equally high ranking status on their students. This false status is obviously of little value. The only way to achieve a high level of skill is through diligent and determined practice.

Endeavor to Excel : To realize maximum satisfaction and evolution, the karateka should view his training as a life long endeavor rather than merely a hobby or exercise regimen. The study of karate is a tool toward one's ultimate goal- mastery of the self.

Display Courtesy: Good manners is always a good idea. In a difficult situation, courtesy may defuse a potentially violent and dangerous situation.

Refrain from Violent Behavior: Though it seems antithetical to the study of martial arts, this precepts actually reinforces the previous four. By acting in a controlled and rational manner, being honest, setting long range goals, and being courteous, one should not ever be put in a position to have to resort to violence. This does not mean that one should refrain from violence if it is needed to protect oneself or others. It does mean that violence should be avoided if possible. It is thought that by harming others, even when justified, will also do great harm to oneself.
